Urban Project

This Project is part of the course Urban Design. The project had 2 parts, 1 group and 1 individual. For the group project we had to assess the problems of the selected urban area which in this case was the Old Gold Souq in Deira, Dubai. We found out that the souq had a main circulation vein but then there was no organization and it was only random secondary streets and alleys. We decided to make it more systematic and organized. Keeping the main circulation vein, but changing the shading device that is old and not appealing to the eye and giving it a more modern look.

This meant that the walkable areas also had to be redesigned to fit with the shop arrangement and new shading design which allowed us to add seating areas that the space was lacking and this allowed us to control which areas would have some kind of disruption in the walkways.

For the Individual, I decided to take inspiration of the other side of the street buildings depending on the edge of the site, as in one side there was a higher rise buildings, therefore to keep the urban continutity I followed a similar design, whereas, in the oposite side, the buildings were lower so I followed a similar height and approach, not only for the building shape but also for the use of the building, comercial or residential depending on the zoning of our site.
